Key Takeaways:
  • Talk therapy may not work for everyone.

  • Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) provides alternative therapeutic approaches, like dietary supplements and lifestyle changes.

  • Alternative therapeutic approaches, such as art therapy and dance movement therapy can help individuals manage their mental health concerns better.

From movies to books to TV shows, it seems that psychotherapy, more commonly known as talk therapy, is everywhere. Not just in fiction, psychotherapy is just as popular in real life.

But, what do you do if talk therapy is not the right fit for you? Although it is purported as the most effective treatment for mental health conditions, its success varies across individuals. So, what if you don't see results from just talk therapy? Or, don't have the time to commit to weekly sessions? Or, want to explore supplementary methods?

No matter what your reason is, there are alternative therapeutic approaches out there that can help you manage your concerns better.

What are talk therapy alternatives?

Talk therapy is an effective tool, but what works for one person may not work for everyone. The complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) approach, thus, aims to provide alternatives to talk therapy which can either supplement one's progress or help one find relief if they are unable to progress with talk therapy. CAM includes several approaches, including dietary supplements and lifestyle changes.

However, this article only talks about therapy alternative approaches and supplementary techniques, which can help people cope better with their symptoms.

Art Therapy

For those who find it challenging to express themselves through words, art therapy can be an excellent approach. Through creative expression, individuals can enhance their emotional well-being and begin their healing journey. This technique integrates healing elements of self-expression through art with applied psychological methods, to help ease symptoms of mental health conditions.

Art therapy alleviates the symptoms of various conditions, including anxiety and depression.

Emotion-Focused Therapy

Emotion-focused therapy helps you regulate your emotions rather than suppress them. It focuses on the idea that emotions can help guide your individual choices and decision-making. Hence, it is crucial to understand what you're feeling instead of avoiding your emotions.

Emotion-focused therapy helps you understand your emotions better while allowing yourself to feel them fully. It is based on the idea that lacking emotional awareness and avoiding unpleasant emotions can deteriorate your ability to process them in the long run, impacting your emotional well-being.

Dance/Movement Therapy

Like Art therapy, Dance/Movement therapy is another creative therapy approach. This therapeutic approach is based on the idea that what affects the mind, also affects the body. Hence, by focusing on one's movement and body, it is possible to find relief for their mental health condition.

Moving your body has been associated with better emotional well-being, whether it is through dance or exercise. When you move around, your brain releases endorphins, or the feel-good hormones, that help in elevating your mood.

Mindfulness meditation

Using techniques like mindfulness meditation, helps your mind slow down and focus on the present. It helps you acknowledge your emotions, thoughts, and feelings, in the present moment, without invoking a response. Thus, it helps you slowly reconnect your mind and body.

Mindfulness techniques have been found to be quite effective for anxiety, depression and mild symptoms of other mental health conditions.

Self-care apps

Although self-care apps are not an alternate form of therapy, many contain expert-backed information that can help you cope with the stresses of daily life. From providing mindfulness tips to helping you learn how to increase your productivity, self-care apps can be an excellent supplementary tool for therapy.

Journaling

Establishing a therapeutic bond can be difficult, but when you want to release your emotions in a safe space, journaling can be a great tool. It not only provides some relief but can also help with new insights.

If journaling is beneficial for you, it may be worthwhile to look into writing therapy, a systematic approach to journaling or writing about your emotions.

Online support groups

Dealing with mental health conditions can make you feel alone, even with therapy. Joining online community groups and connecting with others in a similar situation helps you learn from their experiences and feel less alone. While these groups cannot replace therapy, they can be an effective tool to ensure that you adhere to your treatment plan.

Therapy is a big commitment and the journey to better mental health is not always easy. Although talk therapy is effective, it does not have to be the only therapy out there. Using therapy alternative approaches, you can explore different ways to manage your symptoms better and find emotional balance.

Amaha does not deal with medical or psychological emergencies. We are not designed to offer support in crisis situations - including when an individual is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, or is showing symptoms of severe clinical disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions. In these cases, in-person medical intervention is the most appropriate form of help.

If you feel you are experiencing any of these difficulties, we would urge you to seek help at the nearest hospital or emergency room where you can connect with a psychiatrist, social worker, counsellor or therapist in person. We recommend you to involve a close family member or a friend who can offer support.

You can also reach out to a suicide hotline in your country of residence: http://www.healthcollective.in/contact/helplines
