Different-Techniques-of-Psychoanalysis

Among the many therapy approaches, psychoanalytic therapy has been one of the most important types of approach. Psychoanalytic therapy is also known as talk therapy which is based on the theories and principles of psychoanalysis - a treatment approach developed by Sigmund Freud. It focuses on the unconscious and past experiences of a person and helps people explore their unconscious thoughts and emotions, which can be a source of psychological distress.

Psychoanalysis can be used for a number of mental health conditions including depression, sexual problems, phobias, OCD, anxiety, and more.

Different Techniques of Psychoanalysis

Therapists who use psychoanalysis have various ways to help their clients express their thoughts and feelings. People can visit their therapist at least once a month The techniques used in psychoanalysis can help clients work their way through anxious or negative thoughts and understand any hidden patterns.

Dream Interpretation

Being described as the royal road to the unconscious mind, dream interpretation has been one of the most important techniques of psychoanalysis. Freud believed that dreams indicate a person’s unconscious desires, wishes, and undiscovered anxieties on a person. Freud proposed that the events, characters, and symbols in a dream are a person’s expressions in disguise. However, this isn’t very widely used now.

Free association

Free association is a technique where the client is encouraged to speak freely without any filter. The therapist asks the client to say whatever comes to their mind about a situation without worrying about it being embarrassing or irrelevant. The therapist helps the client go deeper into a situation to help gain insight into the repressed thoughts, feelings, emotions, and memory. Free association can often lead to unexpected connections, an understanding of triggers, and underlying causes of distress.

Transference

Transference is the unconscious transfer of thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours of a significant person in the client’s life to the therapist. It could be the client’s mother, teacher, or anyone who has played a role in the person’s life. They tend to unconsciously start seeing the therapist as an important figure based on someone from their lives and transfer their thoughts and feelings according to the significant person. This can help the therapist and client identify past events, triggers, unresolved conflicts, and emotions.

Benefits of psychoanalytic therapy

While different individuals benefit from different types of therapy, psychoanalytic therapy has its own unique benefits.

  • Psychoanalysis helps a person put forth all their emotions, thoughts, and feelings, regardless of how embarrassing it may be. This reduces avoidance and also helps the therapist identify moments when a client is trying to avoid a certain situation.

  • Psychoanalysis can also help identify patterns in a person. It could be recurring thoughts or repetitive actions that lead to distress.

  • While most therapies focus on the present, psychoanalysis considers past experiences to be a crucial part of a person’s therapy treatment. A person can trace their thoughts or emotions back and gain insight into how it has developed. It helps understand childhood experiences, past trauma, or any significant event that influenced a person’s present thoughts and behaviours.

  • Through psychoanalysis, a person has the ability to explore themselves and become more aware of themselves and the way they function.

Effectiveness of psychoanalytic therapy

Numerous studies have supported the effectiveness of psychoanalytic therapy. Researchers have concluded the efficacy of short-term and long-term psychoanalytic therapy for numerous conditions. Another study has also shown reduced symptoms of certain pathologies. However, it is important to know that the effectiveness varies according to the individual and the mental health condition that is being addressed along with other factors that also play a role in the treatment.

Psychoanalysis is a valuable therapy approach in the field of psychology and can help individuals transform their lives.

Amaha does not deal with medical or psychological emergencies. We are not designed to offer support in crisis situations - including when an individual is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, or is showing symptoms of severe clinical disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions. In these cases, in-person medical intervention is the most appropriate form of help.

If you feel you are experiencing any of these difficulties, we would urge you to seek help at the nearest hospital or emergency room where you can connect with a psychiatrist, social worker, counsellor or therapist in person. We recommend you to involve a close family member or a friend who can offer support.

You can also reach out to a suicide hotline in your country of residence: http://www.healthcollective.in/contact/helplines
